Frequently asked questions

Answers about how learnspense works, data privacy, and the basics of expense tracking — all in one place.

If you are new to tracking your expenses, you probably have questions — both about how learnspense works and about the practice of budgeting itself. Below are honest answers to the most common ones. If something is not covered here, feel free to reach out.

About the app

How learnspense works, what it stores, and what to expect.

Do I need an account to use learnspense?

No. learnspense does not require any sign-up, login, or account creation. You open the app and start tracking immediately. There is no email verification, no password to remember, and no profile to set up. This also means there is no account to recover if you clear your browser data — your expense records live entirely on your device.

Is my expense data safe?

Yes. All expense data is stored exclusively in your browser's localStorage. It never leaves your device and is never transmitted to any server. learnspense has no backend database, no cloud sync, and no way to access your financial information. The only data that exists is the data on your device. This also means that if you clear your browser's site data or use a different browser, your expense history will not be there — so it is a good idea to export a backup periodically if your records are important to you.

Is learnspense really free?

Yes, learnspense is completely free for personal use. There are no subscriptions, no premium tiers, no paywalls, and no feature limits. The app is supported by non-intrusive ads displayed through Google AdSense. You will never be asked to pay to unlock features or remove limitations. Every feature in the app — expense tracking, dashboard charts, history, categories, daily budget calculations — is available to everyone at no cost.

Does learnspense work offline?

Yes. Once the app has loaded in your browser, all expense tracking functionality works without an internet connection. You can add expenses, view your dashboard, check your history, and manage categories entirely offline. The only things that require connectivity are ads served by Google AdSense and the initial page load. Your expense data is processed locally in your browser at all times, so a spotty connection will never interrupt your tracking.

What happens if I clear my browser data?

Clearing your browser's localStorage or site data will permanently erase all your expense records, category settings, and preferences. learnspense cannot recover this data because it was never stored on a server. To protect against accidental data loss, consider exporting your expense history regularly. Many browsers also let you clear data selectively — if you want to clear cookies without losing localStorage, check your browser's advanced settings.

Can I use learnspense on my phone?

Yes. learnspense is fully responsive and works on mobile browsers. The interface adapts to smaller screens, and all features — adding expenses, viewing charts, checking history — are accessible on a phone just as they are on a desktop. You can also add learnspense to your phone's home screen through your browser's "Add to Home Screen" option, which makes it behave like a native app with its own icon and full-screen view.

About tracking and budgeting

Broader questions about the habit of expense tracking and why it matters.

Why should I track my expenses?

Tracking your expenses is the single most effective way to understand where your money goes. Most people have a rough idea of their income but a very unclear picture of their spending. Small purchases — a coffee here, a ride there, a subscription you forgot about — add up in ways that are genuinely surprising when you see them totaled. Tracking creates awareness, and awareness changes behavior. Studies consistently show that people who track their spending tend to spend less, not because they follow strict budgets, but because the act of recording a purchase makes it more intentional. You start to ask yourself whether each expense is actually worth it.

What is the difference between tracking expenses and budgeting?

Expense tracking is about recording what you have already spent. Budgeting is about planning what you will spend in the future. Tracking is observational — it answers the question "where did my money go?" Budgeting is prescriptive — it answers the question "where should my money go?" Most people find tracking easier to start with because it requires no planning and no restrictions. You just write down what you spend. Once you have a few weeks of tracking data, you naturally have the information you need to create a realistic budget based on your actual habits rather than guesswork. learnspense focuses on tracking first, and the insights from tracking make budgeting decisions easier.

How often should I log my expenses?

Daily is ideal, but done is better than perfect. Logging expenses as they happen — right after you pay for something — takes seconds and keeps your records accurate. If that is not practical, a daily check-in at the end of the day works well. The key is consistency. Even logging expenses once a week is far better than not tracking at all. The longer you wait between logging sessions, the more likely you are to forget small purchases, and small purchases are often where the most surprising spending happens. Find a rhythm that fits your life. The habit matters more than the frequency.

What categories should I use for my expenses?

The best categories are the ones that reflect how you actually spend. Common categories include food, transportation, housing, utilities, entertainment, shopping, health, and savings. But do not overthink it — start with broad categories and split them later if you need more detail. For example, "food" might work fine at first, but over time you might want to separate groceries from eating out to see how much you spend on each. A common mistake is creating too many categories upfront and then finding the tracking process tedious. Start simple and add categories as you notice patterns worth separating.

How is learnspense different from other expense trackers?

learnspense is intentionally minimal. Most expense tracking apps require accounts, connect to bank feeds, offer complex budgeting frameworks, and push notifications and goals. learnspense does none of that. It stores data locally in your browser, requires no account, and focuses on one thing: helping you see where your money goes. It is local-first, meaning your data never leaves your device. It is free with no feature limits. And it is built by a single developer as a side project — not a company with a monetization strategy built around your financial data. If you want a full-featured financial suite, learnspense is not for you. If you want a simple, private, no-friction way to track spending, it is exactly that.

Will adding expenses every day take too much time?

No. Once you build the habit, logging an expense takes less than ten seconds. You pick a category, type the amount, and confirm. The interface is designed to minimize friction — no extra fields to fill out, no confirmations to click through, no sync delays. Most users log expenses in under a minute total per day. The real time investment is building the habit in the first week. After that, it becomes automatic, like checking the weather or your messages.
